Dissecting The Eagle - Paper's Production Schedule

Our goal is to have The Eagle in your hands by the first of each month. To accomplish that, our deadlines are considerably earlier than we’d prefer.

Here’s how the typical month works, though dates vary depending on month:

Delivery

The fate of the paper is out of our hands at this point.

A publisher of a major newspaper, talking about investments in technology, newsgathering and staff once opined “all this great work we do, and it ends up in the hands of a 12-year-old we can’t control.”

The “paper-boy” is pretty much out of the picture now, but final delivery is still a major issue.

The main Post Office processes The Eagle and sends it back to the 34231 Post Office, where it is sorted by address and delivered.

The Eagle and our local postal carriers know getting the paper is important to many of you.

Delivery varies depending on Post Office schedules.  Late papers are not the fault of the mails carriers or The Eagle.

A switch to a different class of postage would increase costs up to $1.35 per copy.

Shortening Deadlines

We’ve examined various ways to shorten deadlines and speed delivery.

The Eagle is too small to use faster printing methods. Such a change would result in a tabloid size and newsprint paper. Many of you tell us one of the things you especially like about the paper is the 8.5 x 11 format.

In short, we will continue to bring you as meaningful and timely publication as possible within deadline and economic constraints, while searching for alternatives.

Thank you for your continued support.
